Hurricane Laura
Hurricane Laura, the strong category 4 storm, made landfall in the early hours of August 27th on the coast of Louisiana, about 30 miles from the Texas border, bringing lashing rain and sustained winds of 150 miles per hour. While the storm was downgraded to a category 2 as it moved further inland, hurricane-force winds and widespread damage continued.
PDA is working with our international partners where Hurricane Laura impacted Haiti and the Dominican Republic, in addition to the affected U.S. presbyteries.
Initial response grants have been disbursed to respond to immediate needs.

Easter tornadoes
During the weekend of Easter 2020, several southeastern states experienced severe storms and tornadoes. Throughout the two-day outbreak, a total of 140 tornadoes touched down across 10 states, inflicting widespread and locally catastrophic damage. We mourn the lives lost and lift up the communities responding to these tornadoes while also dealing with the restrictions of COVID-19.
PDA has virtually deployed National Response Team members to support the response while also granting funds. We continue to be in touch with the affected presbyteries about long term recovery needs.

Iowa Derecho
On August 10, severe thunderstorms with long track damaging winds (derecho) devastated Iowa, causing widespread power outages for more than 150,000 people for several days. As many as 14 million acres of farmland were also damaged by the storm.
PDA is working with the Presbyteries of North Central Iowa, Des Moines, Prospect Hill and East Iowa to respond to this storm. National Response Team members are virtually deployed to assist with the initial response. Spring Tornadoes
Overnight on March 24th, severe thunderstorms developed across the Lower Mississippi Valley and into the Tennessee Valley. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center reported at least 12 tornadoes and 84 high wind events with most impacts in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee.
PDA is working the St. Andrew Presbytery and Mississippi Presbytery to meet the needs of their communities. Initial assistance grants have been disbursed and National Response Team members deployed to work alongside them.

Heavy rain caused catastrophic flooding and flash flooding across Tennessee beginning August 21. At least 17 fatalities have been confirmed.
