About the church: As a Matthew 25 congregation, Leland Presbyterian Church (LPC) has long been known for ways to engage in local mission beyond the local church. When the March tornadoes passed through the Mississippi Delta, LPC knew immediately that they wanted to be part of the recovery effort. Within hours of the tornadoes, members of the congregation were helping with initial search and rescue efforts pulling neighbors out of the wreckage. Within a few days, Leland served as a community supply donation center and disaster recovery volunteer shelter. They later discerned a call to be a PDA Volunteer Host Site and continued using their converted education building as a hospitality ministry for volunteers. Working collaboratively with St. Andrews and Mississippi Presbyteries, they are excited to welcome your volunteer group to Leland!
About the disaster: On March 24, 2023, several communities in the South Mississippi Delta were hit by a F-4 tornado. Over 20 people lost their lives, and over 70% of the community of Rolling Fork was destroyed. Wind gusts up to 200mph debarked trees, mangled cars, and destroyed homes. Together with the Community Foundation of Washington County and several other faith-based non-profit organizations, PDA volunteers will help in the community recovery effort in Rolling Fork, MS.
