On October 7, 2023 a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Herat Province in western Afghanistan. The high magnitude jolt was followed by a series of aftershocks until the next morning. More than 2,000 have been killed and search and rescue continues.

PDA is working with our partner on the ground to provide emergency assistance. Initial assessments are still underway but immediate needs include for safe shelters, winterization and hygiene kits. Food security, especially nutritional supplies for children, pregnant and lactating mothers have been identified as a priority at the moment as well. There is also a great need for psychosocial support.
