RESILIENCY: "being wiped away and then coming back to form; a movement back from an impact"

On December 26, 2004 an undersea earthquake off the coast of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, sent a series of waves unlike any ever recorded. The Indian Ocean Tsunami killed over 230,000 people in 14 countries and became one of the deadliest natural disasters in history.

For the past 10 years Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and our partners within the ACT Alliance have been working alongside families as they rebuild their communities and lives. Documentary filmmaker David Barnhart has spent the past decade working with survivors in the hardest hit country of Indonesia to develop a Story Project with survivors that captures their thoughts, reflections, and experiences over the long term trajectory of recovery.

"The Resiliency Series: A 10 Year Retrospective of the 2004 Tsunami" is the first part of a new online story series which will focus on Resiliency, attempting to get at the heart of recovery and resiliency through the words and experiences of survivors.
